Cash-secured puts are one way to earn yield on USDC (or another stablecoin) when you are willing to buy an asset at a price below today's price: a tokenized stock, BTC, ETH or SOL. You post enough stablecoins to cover the purchase at the strike, sell the put, collect premium, and wait. Compared with stablecoin lending, premium can be higher when volatility is rich — in exchange for the obligation to buy if assigned.
This is not a savings rate. It is income from selling an option. Primer: Crypto cash-secured puts.
Puts vs lending vs the Buy Low strategy
| Path | What you earn | What you risk |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin lending | A variable rate paid by borrowers | The platform or the borrowers fail; the rate can fall |
| Buy Low strategy (dual investment) | Packaged yield for a target price and date | You may have to buy the asset; the exchange holds your funds; the APR can mislead |
| Cash-secured put (you sell it yourself) | Option premium for your strike and expiry | You may have to buy at the strike; collateral is locked |
Lending fits when you want no assignment and accept a rate that moves with borrowing demand. The Buy Low strategy on a centralized exchange's dual-investment menu works like a put with a simpler screen — see Dual Investment Explained. Writing the put yourself opens strike selection and, on RFQ platforms, competing premiums. Lending rates move daily, so compare the premium for your strike with the live supply rate on the market you would actually use, over the same period.
The trade in plain numbers
Tokenized NVDA trades at $180. You would like to own 25 shares at $160. You sell a one-month put struck at $160 and post 25 × $160 = $4,000 USDC.
- Premium: say $2.40 per share, so $60 up front (illustrative). That is 1.5% of the collateral for the month.
- If NVDA stays above $160: the put expires; you keep the $60 and the USDC unlocks.
- If NVDA is below $160 and the put is exercised: you buy 25 tokenized shares at $160 from collateral, above the market price at that point, and keep the premium. Your effective entry is $157.60.
In a listed market the same put would cover 100 shares and need $16,000 of collateral. Tokenized shares are divisible and Overcast currently sets no minimum trade size, so the position can match the amount you actually want to own. The trade works the same way with BTC, ETH or SOL as the asset: Crypto cash-secured puts has an ETH example, and the extra risks of a tokenized stock are in Tokenized stock options.
You were paid to wait. The payment is the premium; the cost is the obligation.
Why sellers use puts for USDC income
- Limit-buy with income. Willing to own the asset at the strike; premium improves effective entry if assigned.
- Getting paid for volatility. When the market expects big moves, premiums are richer and assignment is more likely.
- First half of the wheel strategy. After assignment, you can sell a covered call on the asset you now hold.
What it is not: unsecured leverage. Cash-secured means the purchase is pre-funded. And it is not “get paid to buy the dip” without the fine print — if the dip is deep, you buy above the new market price.
Earn while waiting for a limit buy
A cash-secured put pays you while you stand ready to buy at the strike. A resting limit order alone usually pays nothing. If you want income with no chance of owning a volatile asset, lending or cash instruments fit better.
Onchain vs centralized
On a centralized exchange your stablecoins sit in a margin or earn account, and the premium comes from the order book or a dual-investment menu. Onchain, they sit in escrow you can inspect, and the premium comes from an order book, a vault, an AMM or an RFQ. The platform types are compared in Onchain options explained.
On Overcast you request quotes for a cash-secured put by choosing the amount, strike and expiry. Trading desks compete, the premium is paid up front, and the trade settles onchain. How Overcast works.
Risks
- Assignment — you buy at the strike when the price is lower.
- Opportunity cost — if the price rises, you kept USDC and missed the asset’s upside (you were paid for that).
- Stablecoin and platform risk — the stablecoin could lose its peg, and it matters who holds your funds.
- Software and price-feed risk onchain.
FAQ
Puts vs lending for stablecoin income?
Depends on whether you accept assignment. Lending: no assignment, variable rate. Cash-secured puts: option premium, obligation to buy at the strike. Dual-investment Buy Low strategy: packaged version of the put. Compare after-fee income for the same horizon and the same willingness to own the asset.
Can a put replace a resting limit buy?
A cash-secured put is that idea expressed as an option: you are paid while standing ready to buy at the strike. A resting limit order alone usually pays nothing.
What if I only want to buy lower?
Sell puts struck where you are willing to buy. You keep the premium if the dip never comes; you buy at the strike if it does. That is income for a contingent purchase — not free money.

Writing options involves substantial risk. A covered call limits your upside and leaves you fully exposed to declines in the underlying asset. A cash-secured put can oblige you to buy an asset at a price above its market value at expiry. Premiums, yields and APRs shown are illustrative or historical, are not guaranteed and do not predict future results. Crypto assets and tokenized securities are highly volatile and may lose some or all of their value. Smart contracts may contain vulnerabilities, and onchain transactions are irreversible.
